You Know You're From Winston-Salem If...

Winston-Salem, North Carolina, is a city brimming with unique charm, local quirks, and a rich history that only true locals (or those who've spent enough time there) truly appreciate. If you've ever found yourself nodding along to these points, chances are, you're from the Twin City!

1. The "Hot Now" Sign is Your Guiding Light

Forget traffic lights; the real signal to stop in Winston-Salem is when the "Hot and Fresh" sign lights up at Krispy Kreme. That's right, the original Krispy Kreme location and its corporate headquarters call Winston-Salem home, making fresh, warm doughnuts a local institution [01:28].

2. You Say "Buna Vista"

Pronunciation can be a dead giveaway! If you say "Buena Vista" as "Buna Vista," you're likely a local. Any other pronunciation and you might just be visiting [02:36].

3. "I'm Fixing To..." Is Part of Your Vocabulary

This classic Southern saying is a staple. "I'm fixing to go do something" is a wonderfully vague phrase that indicates an intention, but with a timeline that's entirely flexible – a true mark of Southern charm [03:05].

4. Barbecue Means Pulled Pork (and Lexington Style Reigns)

In North Carolina, especially in the Triad, "barbecue" isn't a generic term for grilled meats. It specifically refers to delicious pulled pork. You're well-acquainted with the distinct Lexington style barbecue and likely look forward to the annual barbecue festival [03:53].

5. Wake Forest University's True Home

You know that despite its name, Wake Forest University isn't in Wake Forest, NC. It famously relocated to Winston-Salem in the 1950s [05:43]. You might also be proud of its strong golf program and famous alumni [06:29].

6. Texas Pete is a Local Hero

Despite its name, you know that the iconic Texas Pete hot sauce, a condiment found on tables across North Carolina, is proudly made right here in Winston-Salem [07:46].

7. Old Salem and Moravian Stars Are Holiday Essentials

You've strolled through the historic homes and cobblestone walkways of Old Salem, and during the holidays, you know the city lights up with beautiful Moravian stars [08:41]. You also understand why it's called the "Twin City" – a nod to the combination of Winston and Salem [09:43]. And Reynolda Village and Gardens are likely a favorite spot [09:56].

8. You've Cheered on the Dash or Hiked Pilot Mountain

Attending a Winston-Salem Dash baseball game at Truist Stadium is a quintessential local experience [11:03]. And for outdoor adventures, a trip to Pilot Mountain is a common go-to [11:50].

9. Krispy Kreme Runs and Moravian Delights

The Krispy Kreme Run, where participants eat donuts during a race, is a unique tradition you're familiar with. And during the holidays, your taste buds crave Moravian sugar cookies and sugar cakes [12:34].

10. "Rush Hour" is a Brief Concept

You've experienced Winston-Salem's "rush hour" and know it's typically a very short affair, often lasting only about five minutes – a luxury compared to larger cities [13:48].

Winston-Salem truly has a character all its own. What are some of your favorite local sayings or quirks? Share them in the comments!
